french food?
My brother mentioned this to me the other day, but I wasn’t sure that I’d find any news sources that talked about it...
Cubbie’s restaurant in Beaufort, N.C., stopped serving french fries—they’re now serving "freedom fries." The diner’s owner said he was inspired by anti-German foodies during World War I who renamed sauerkraut liberty cabbage.
In a move that may anger some Francophiles or menu writers, a Palm Beach County commissioner has requested a resolution that would change the name of the American food staple known as "french fries."
Commissioner Burt Aaronson is upset with France’s reluctance to back a U.S.-led war with Iraq and wants the name changed to "freedom fries" or "American fries" in his county.
I think that’s kind of extreme. I mean, I really don’t think of France when I eat French Fries. And the aforementioned war-name-changes (Liberty Cabbage) were to change things named from a country we were at war with, I believe—we aren’t at war with France.

Ugh, that makes me sick. France is not a state in the U.S., they don’t have to agree with everything we do. Hell, as long as they aren’t helping or hindering, why should we bother at all? Are we going to bar every nationality or culture from the U.S. that doesn’t support our policies? Geez. I’m still gonna call them french fries. How silly.

I for one am damn proud of my French ancestry and my grandfather liberated France and Belgium in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944/45.
But liberty fries is just plain stupid. They should be called "Chips" and eaten with vinigar and mayo

All this demonstrates is how ignorant the guy in question is. "French fries" are so called because they are frenched, as in cut a specific way. It has nothing to do with them being French.
Sigh.
