browser question
I have a question for those geniuses out there...
This is a reoccuring problem that I’ve noticed in both IE5.5 and IE6. Sometimes (its not consistant), when I right click on a page and do view source nothing happens. And sometimes, when I right click on an image to save it, it suggests that I save it as untitled.bmp instead of its native format of gif or jpg.
It seems like its happening when my computer is getting tired and needs to be restarted, but then sometimes it happens no matter what.
Any hits? Is there a setting somewhere that I’m missing? Maybe a download to fix this? Or am I the only one who has seen this?
Added to say: - I found a link about Temporary Files that might be the key. After emptying my temporary files folder, I was able to right click and view source and save images in their correct format. We’ll see if this is a consistant fix.

Hi Kristine! If you find an answer, I’d love to know! I use IE 6 and both things have been happening to me.
BTW, have you read "Legend" by Jude Deveraux? What a great book!
Take care!

actually, this same thing used to happen to me...but constantly! i called microsoft over and over, but they finally just threw up their hands and told me i was nuts. it ended up fixing itself after i completely uninstalled IE and reinstalled it from a fresh download.
good luck with that. ;)

I get the same problem when my computer is tired, too. It drives me absolutely insane. How did you clear out your temp files? I wanna try that! : ) Is that the sliding bar thingie that the article talks about?

How to clear temp files: In Internet explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options. On the General Tab, click Delete Files. Click okay, and it will think for a few minutes while it deletes the temp files, and that’s it!
Definition of Temporary Internet Files: The Temporary Internet Files folder is the location on your hard disk where Web pages and files (such as graphics) are stored as you view them. This speeds up the display of pages you frequently visit or have already seen, because Internet Explorer can open them from your hard disk instead of from the Web. So its save to delete them.

I have this problem at work, but not at home. As a matter of fact, the guy that lost his bookmarks lost them by trying to fix this issue. I don’t have IE 6 on either machine.

Both the view source and .bmp issues are browser cache related. The view source one is MS knowledge base article Q306907 and the bitmap is Q260650. The answer is "delete the temporary internet files by selecting Tools, Options, General tab and select the Delete Files button." Deleting the files can take a while depending on how fast your machine is and how big the cache is. Microsoft admits this is a bug so it may even get fixed.

Andy beat me to it. I had the same problem and it was a matter of deleting the temp files. I also made the temp file size smaller so it won’t take so long to delete 'em.

Yep, that’s what I did, too. LOL!

There is a download for windows called tweakui, one of the things it allows you to do is clear temp. internet files upon closing I.E. . this along with increasing the size of the file should make your problem happen a lot less. fyi tweakui does not seem to clear the cookies from the temp file.
