random health facts
My secretary brought in a copy of a health magazine she gets from her insurance, and there were some interesting health tips I wanted to share:
- Breast-feeding triggers bone loss in areas prone to fractures later in life - such as the hip, wrist, and spine. But this lost bone is completely replaced - remodeled with fresh, new bone within two years of having a baby.
- Meditation may be helpful in relieving the pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia. In a study of 90 women diagnosed with fibromyalgia, those who meditated 45 minutes to one hour per day reported they had less pain and fatigue and slept better. The meditators also had lower levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone.
- Just one hour of walking per week can cut a woman’s risk of heart disease in half.
- Heart disease is the leading killer of woman. Yet 60% of woman believe cancer is their greatest health risk.
- More people are being killed by air polution from traffic than by traffic accidents. ... for someone who has heart disease, severe pollution could trigger a heart attack. Or in someone who has asthma, it could trigger a fatal asthma attack.

Thanks for the information, Kristine. I have fibromyalgia and think I might just give the meditation a try. Interestingly enough, I *do* have low cortisol levels related to yet another health problem. Hmmm. Something to think about.
