hosting research

This will be a boring research post that I’m just putting together mainly for pros and cons. If you have hosting knowledge to share, by all means, do so!!

Edited to add: I have some specific needs - at least 450++ MB of space, and at least 7GB bandwidth. I’d like to be able to host multiple domains with one account. I’d love to pay less than $25 a month. And *ideally*, having cgi programs run outside of the cgi-bin would be cool, since that’s how I’ve always had it set up. With that in mind, that’s what my extended post is looking at smile

Hosting Matters - recommended; good stuff at wht about them
425MB/15GB
60 subdomains (which I think you can point domains at?
looks like cgi programs must be in cgi-bin. Yuck.
$46 is too much, and the space on the $26 plan is less what I have up now, and I want to expand not go backwards. I need something in between.

Always Webhosting
unlimted storage sounds too good to be true
ensim control panel? might be better than cpanel which I hate
unlimited domains?
$24.95

FutureQuest - recommended, but too much $

Verve Hosting - recommended by several;
I’d have to get multiple packages for my disk space needs. 2) Webmaster Plan I for theredkitchen and blogplates, and a Webmaster Plan II for :l-p: ?
That sounds like kinda a mess to keep straight. But its still a good deal
Ewwie cpanel

your-site.com - recommended, but not enough space. I use them for locatis.com, and am happy with them for that smaller site.

Veoweb - previously recommended, now stay away!

Aletia - the host I’m on my way out of.

Added:
Below10 host - recommended by my zalary-love through Eden
500MB/10GB
no multiple domains/have to have multiple accounts

Ventures Online - recommended
No multiple domains
good price
cgi must be put inside of cgi-bin

100megs webhosting - recommended by Christine M
has multiple domains if ask for $2 extra per month per domain
cgi inside of cgi-bin
1000MB/10GB
check out forums
$20 + domain monthly fee = at least $24 a month - not bad!

Even after all this, I still don’t know what I’m gonna do. Ugh.

kristine, i’ve been using hostway for over a year now, and i have absolutely no complaints (knock on wood). i actually found them when i registered one of my domains through dotster.

i’ve heard lots of good things about below10host from eden. and they have customizable packages with up to 300mb for around 10 a month (that’s what i’m going with for disenchanted) - because i’m in the same situation as you - i need more space, but don’t want to be paying $30 or $40 a month - esp. considering i don’t think i need excessive bandwidth or all the extras like 100 pop3s and all that. *sigh*

I use venturesonline.com, I’ve had no problems with them and they have super fast cudstomer support.

CoastlandTech.com offers everything most of us need at $35/year with excellent tech support... you might want to check them out..

Kristine, you might want to email Christina at Verve and explain your needs to her to see if perhaps you can come up witha custom plan.

In fact, that’s probably not a bad idea to do with any of the hosting companies.

You might want to check out the host that I use, 100Megs Webhosting.

The Advanced Plan offers 1000 megs of space and 10 gigs of transfer for $20.00/month. You can make up subdomains, and have real domains point to them for $2.00/month per extra domain. They don’t say this anywhere on the site, but they’ll do it if you ask. I’m running both fenwayfaithful.com and christine-murphy.net on the one account. However, you only get the one c-panel per account. If you go to the site and click on *services*, you can access a sample c-panel.

I’m running MT outside of the cgi-bin, so it can be done.

Hardly any downtime...I can’t remember the last time my site was down! Excellent customer support, both via e-mail and on their forums.

I have been with this company since day one...the owner, Reuben Regier, started out with a free hosting company, but soon decided he’d do better with paid hosting. I was one of the people he asked to help test the new service by moving one of my sites over there.

Go and take a look, poke around the forums...I think you will like what you see!

Eventually I will be switching switching to either hostrocket.com (recommended by brookelyn.com) or dreamhost.com(recommended by ellessu.net), both have some interesting plans. You might want to check’m.

Oh no! Not Dreamhost, ANYTHING but Dreamhost!!

Eh, I guess they’re not that bad. I was with them for two years. Their service is mediocre and very slowly deteriorating and their prices are above average, although they just released new price plans that seem not too bad.

They’re reliable at least. . . But I really do think signing up with them is like stepping back in time a year.

I know this post is ages old, but I have something to add for people who get here via Google, like I did...

I had Always Webhosting for a few months and of all the hosts I have had they were the absolute WORST. The uptime and price were good, but that’s it. Their support was terrible (they’d answer questions with 'suggestions' like "Sorry, but I don’t really don’t know. Check Google!"), and the one guy who runs it is touchy and vindictive. I rated them on some host rating site and I actually gave them a good rating for their price and uptime, but commented that I didn’t appreciate the lack of support. Within FIVE MINUTES all of my domains were disabled and my account was cancelled. They wouldn’t answer my emails so I filed a complaint with the same host rating company, and they actually made up reasons for my cancellation, and lied about giving a refund! I had to call my credit card company to get the money back. The guy who runs this is immature and will disable your site if he gets his feathers ruffled. Very unprofessional and even the good price isn’t worth that kind of abuse. Avoid Always Webhosting at all costs!
