Why do stupid tv channels

Why do stupid tv channels have to preempt most of my soap? I was really looking forward to coming home and watching ATWT, and instead, I only got about 10 minutes of the show and instead I got Boaters Plucked From Chilly River Waters. Why do I need to watch 10 minutes of the rescue and then 40 minutes of them TOWING THE FRICKIN CANOE AWAY?!
Anybody else watch As the World Turns that can give me a recap? <.sigh.> searching myself for one, too....
